If you want to save money on your heating and lighting bill, then one of the best things that you can do is to change your utility supplier. You may think that this is a complicated and protracted procedure – and a few years ago you would have been dead right. However, today you can simply compare different suppliers online, make your selection and sign up.
It takes no more than a few minutes. The hardest part is collecting all of your bills together. More often than not, the changeover will be made remotely. You will probably have to take a final meter reading for your old supplier to use for their final bill and your new supplier to use as a starting point. It’s not often necessary for any engineers to visit your house. You just get the same electricity and gas – but you pay a different supplier.
Some people feel slightly disloyal moving away from a supplier that they will, in many cases, have been with for years. It’s a little ironic that the longer you’ve been with your current supplier, the more likely it is that you’ll save money simply by switching.
At the moment, the utility companies don’t seem to reward customer loyalty very well at all – quite the opposite in fact. So there’s absolutely no need to feel the slightest guilt when you move to save money on your utilities.
The very act of changing supplier will often be enough to save you quite a bit of money. However, you might as well maximize your savings by looking for “duel fuel” or “multi-service” deals which can often save you more money based upon how many different services you take.
You might also find that your bills can be reduced further by selecting the best method of payment. Some companies offer small discounts to customers who get their utility bills sent to them by e-mail rather than mailed out in the post. It all adds up.
